Goal: Configure your RoastLogger settings to properly connect with your roasting equipment and customize your monitoring preferences.

Prerequisites: You need an active RoastLog account and the RoastLogger application installed or accessed via web browser.

We've designed RoastLogger to be flexible enough to work with various roasting setups while remaining intuitive to use. Some of your preferences, like temperature and mass scales, are synchronized from your roastlog.com account, while equipment-specific settings are configured directly in the RoastLogger application.

To access your settings in RoastLogger, click on your name in the upper right corner, and then select Device settings.

Device Settings

Device settings control how RoastLogger connects to and interprets data from your specific roasting equipment.

If you're using a Loring or other roaster with direct integration, some settings are not used since your roaster controls those values, like label, TC type, etc.

  1. Location: If you have multiple roasting facilities, this dropdown controls what Roastables and Roasters are available to you. Most users will have one location. This list comes from the locations you've set up at https://roastlog.com/locations/

  2. Roaster: Select the specific equipment you're currently using. This dropdown is populated from the roasting equipment you've created in the Equipment tab at https://roastlog.com/equipment

  3. Device type: Choose the physical hardware that RoastLogger will connect to:

    • Phidgets - Supports Phidgets TMP1101_1 with VINT hub

    • Bluetooth - RoastLog Data Bridge via Web Bluetooth

    • USB - RoastLog Data Bridge via Web USB

    • Loring - Loring roasters via modbus (requires RoastLogger Mac/PC)

    • Sivetz - Sivetz roasters via modbus (requires RoastLogger Mac/PC)

  4. Thermocouple Configuration:

    • TC Toggles: Use the toggles below TC1, TC2, TC3, and TC4 to enable or disable particular temperature sensors on your device.

    • Name: Set custom names for each temperature sensor. TC1 is always labeled "Bean" by default.

    • TC Type: Click the yellow or black circles to toggle between Type K (yellow) or Type J (black) thermocouples.

    • Offset: Apply temperature offsets to normalize readings. This offset applies to all inputs uniformly across the functional temperature range of each thermocouple.

Thermocouple Calibration Tip

In our experience, when transitioning to RoastLog or replacing thermocouples, it's challenging to perfectly match temperature response curves across the entire range. Rather than attempting this comprehensive calibration, we recommend normalizing temperatures around key milestone events, such as first crack.

We've found this approach minimizes the adjustment period for users who previously logged roasts manually or with different thermocouples. Variation in readings can occur due to differences in thermocouples from different manufacturers, probe age, general wear and tear, and other factors that make perfect normalization difficult.
