One of the unique aspects of coffee production is the reduction in weight of coffee due to moisture loss. Unlike manufactured goods, the sum of the inputs doesn't match the output. RoastLog allows users to account for this moisture loss in two discrete ways.
Auto-calculation of approximate batch yield
As described in the article on Roastables, standard shrinkage percentage for roasted coffees and blends are easy to setup. Doing so auto-calculates the end mass of your batches based on a pre-defined % value.
Pre-populating this field for each Roastable enables RoastLog to automatically calculate end mass for your roasts based on an "approximate" shrinkage percentage. If the field is left empty, actual shrinkage percentage will be calculated based on the end mass manually entered after each roast.
Accurately recording batch yields
While using the Roastable pre-defined shrinkage values, as described above, provides the convenience of having end mass calculated automatically, the most accurate way to record shrinkage is to record the actual ending mass.
To enter the actual ending mass for each roasted batch:
Go to the Inbox
Find and click the roast ID for the roasted batch
From the roast details page, select 'Edit'
Enter the ending mass
Click save
The roast details page will now display the actual shrinkage for your batch. If the green cost was reported for the bean lot(s) associated the Roastable, the roasted batch cost will be calculated as well.
