Goal: Create and configure single-origin roastables for tracking different roast styles from individual bean lots.
Prerequisites: You have bean lots added to your inventory. You understand roastable basics from our Understanding and Managing Roastables guide.
Automatic Roastable Creation
When you add a new bean lot to your inventory, RoastLog will by default automatically create a default single-origin roastable for you. This means you can start roasting immediately without any additional setup.
However, you'll want to visit the Roastables page to review and customize these automatically created roastables to match your specific needs.
To automatically create a new single origin Roastable, ensure the "Create single-origin roastable" is checked when adding a new Bean Lot.
When to Create Additional Single-Origin Roastables
Even with a single bean lot, you might want to create multiple roastables if you're planning different preparations from the same green coffee:
Different roast levels: "Brazil Light" and "Brazil Dark" from the same green coffee lot Different brewing methods: "Ethiopia Pour Over" and "Ethiopia Immersion"
Seasonal offerings: "Holiday Blend Base" using your Brazil beans for a specific seasonal application
Each roastable can have its own roast profile history while drawing from the same green coffee inventory. This gives you the flexibility to track different approaches to the same green coffee without creating separate inventory entries.
Creating Additional Single-Origin Roastables
To create additional roastables from an existing bean lot:
Navigate to the Roastables page
Click "Create roastable bean"
Choose your bean lot from the dropdown
Give it a descriptive name that reflects its intended use
Set any default shrinkage values if known
Save your new roastable
Remember to follow the naming best practices covered in our main roastables guide - use general, descriptive names rather than lot-specific or date-specific names.
Managing Multiple Roastables from One Bean Lot
When you have multiple roastables drawing from the same bean lot, RoastLog tracks the usage for each roastable separately while deducting from the shared inventory. This means you can see exactly how much of your Brazil lot went to light roast versus dark roast applications.
Example scenario: You have a 150kg lot of Brazil Santos and create three roastables:
"Brazil Light" - for pour over customers
"Brazil Dark" - for espresso applications
"Brazil House Blend Component" - for use in your signature blend
Each time you roast any of these, the system deducts from your 150kg Brazil Santos inventory while maintaining separate roast histories for each application.
Switching Bean Lots for Existing Roastables
As you finish one bean lot and source a new lot from the same origin, you can simply update your existing roastable to use the new bean lot. This maintains continuity in your roast profile history while allowing RoastLog to track exactly which bean lots were used and when.
This is particularly useful for maintaining consistent product offerings while your green coffee sourcing evolves throughout the year.
For detailed instructions on updating roastables, see our Understanding and Managing Roastables guide.
