Goal: Get your custom roasting events configured so you can track gas modulations, airflow changes, and roasting milestones during your roasts.
Prerequisites: You should have RoastLogger installed and be able to successfully log into the application.
What Are Roasting Events?
Events in RoastLogger allow you to record important adjustments and milestones during your roast. There are two types of events you can create:
Value-based events: Perfect for parameters with numeric ranges like gas modulations (0-5) or airflow settings (0-100)
Milestone events: For noting specific moments like "yellowing" or "Maillard reaction"
Note, "First crack start" is the one milestone event that is always present. You'll define all of the other events that are specific to your roasting setup.
These events help you document your roasting technique and replicate successful profiles by showing exactly when and how you made adjustments.
Step 1: Access the Roasting Events Settings
In RoastLogger, click on your name in the upper right corner to open the dropdown menu. Select "Roasting events" to access the events configuration page.
Step 2: Create Value-Based Events
Value-based events are ideal for tracking adjustable parameters on your roaster. To create one:
Click the "Add Event" button
Enter a descriptive name (like "Gas" or "Air")
Keep the "Value selectors" checkbox checked
Set your minimum value (typically 0.0)
Set your maximum value (like 5.0 for gas or 100 for airflow)
Choose your step increment (0.5 works well for precise gas control)
For example, I set up my gas modulations from 0.0 to 5.0 in 0.5 increments, giving me eleven precise levels to choose from during roasting.
Step 3: Create Milestone Events
For events that mark specific moments without numeric values:
Click the "Add Event" button
Enter a descriptive name (like "Yellowing")
Uncheck the "Value selectors" checkbox
Save the event
These events will appear as simple buttons that you can click when the milestone occurs during your roast.
Step 4: Using Events During a Roast
Once you have your events configured, they become powerful tools during actual roasting sessions. Your events will appear as buttons in the lower portion of the RoastLogger interface. Buttons are disabled, until you start roasting.
For value-based events:
Click the event button (like "Gas to...")
Use the slider to select your desired value
Click "Save" to record the event
For milestone events:
Simply click the event button when the milestone occurs
The event is automatically recorded with the current time and temperature
Step 5: Managing Your Recorded Events
After recording events during a roast, you have several ways to view and manage them:
Visual indicators:
Events appear as dots on your bean temperature curve
Hover over any dot to see the event details
Event table:
All events for the current roast appear in a table in the left sidebar
The table shows the time, event description, and bean temperature when recorded
Click on any event in the table to edit its value or delete it entirely
This dual visualization helps you understand both the timing and impact of your adjustments throughout the roasting process.
Pro Tips
Events are one of the most powerful features in RoastLogger for developing consistent, repeatable roast profiles. The combination of precise value tracking and milestone markers gives you complete documentation of your roasting process.
Consider creating events for all the parameters you typically adjust during roasting. The more data you capture, the better you'll understand your roasting process and the easier it will be to achieve consistent results batch after batch.
