Goal: Add your first green coffee to your inventory and create a roastable that's ready for production.

Prerequisites: Your RoastLog account is activated and your basic settings are configured.

Let's add your first coffee to the system! This is a two-part process: first, we'll add a green coffee to your inventory, then we'll create a roastable (the coffee you'll actually roast).

In most cases, and in the system, we use the term "Bean lot" to describe green coffee inventory.

Step 1: Add a Coffee to Your Inventory

  1. Navigate to the Inventory page

  2. Click the New Bean button in the upper left corner

  3. When creating a "Coffee" entry at the top:

    • Organize by origin (e.g., "Brazil" or "Ethiopia Yirgacheffe")

    • Match the origin field to the coffee name

    • This organization system will help you stay organized as your inventory grows

  4. Fill in the required fields for your Bean Lot:

    • Arrival date

    • Quantity (weight)

    • Cost (optional but recommended for accurate reporting)

    • Any additional notes about the coffee

  5. Click Save to add this coffee to your inventory

Pro tip: Good organization from the start will save you hours of work later. We recommend using origin countries as your main coffee categories.

Step 2: Your First Roastable is Created Automatically

When you add a Bean Lot, RoastLog by default creates a default single-origin Roastable for you.

  1. Navigate to the Roastables page

  2. You'll see your new coffee listed as a roastable

  3. This roastable is already linked to your inventory and ready to roast

Step 3: Optional - Customize Your Roastable

Want to create different versions of the same coffee (like a light and dark roast)?

  1. From the Roastables page, click New Roastable

  2. Select your Bean Lot as the component

  3. Name it appropriately (e.g., "Brazil Dark Roast")

  4. Add any roasting notes or target profiles

  5. Save your new custom roastable

That's it! You've successfully added your first coffee to RoastLog. Your inventory is set up, your roastable is ready, and you're prepared to start recording roasts.
