Already have thermocouples installed

Mike Singletary Jan 11, 2012 06:44AM PST

I am running two Petroncini roasters that are already equipped with computer systems and thermocouples that measure the various temps. Do I need to purchase additional thermocouples to use with RoastLog or is there a way to connect it into the system already in place?

Hi Mike,

Most likely, you'll want additional thermocouples. Reasons are:

- thermocouples can't be split like speaker wires, so no sharing is possible. To use an existing TC for RoastLog, you'd have to disconnect something from your existing setup.
- most of our customers have been most comfortable when starting with RoastLog if they can leave their existing temperature monitoring system in place. Thermocouples are not super precise, so swapping out one TC for another usually produces different readings (+/- 6 deg F.). It eases the transition to RoastLog to be able to see both the unadulterated readouts you're accustomed to alongside the RoastLog readouts.
- Though it does depend on how your existing TCs are connected, it is often the case the the easiest way to install RoastLog is to drill a new hole. Pretty simple to do and plenty of technicians out there who have experience doing it.
- if you're interested in our multi-input data bridges, which can log up to 4 time/temp curves per roast, you'll probably need to install additional TCs anyway to get things positioned properly to monitor drum temp or exhaust temp or whatever else you'd like to monitor.

I hope that's helpful?

Cheers,
Ryan
